Australians are experiencing the shortest day of the year as the winter solstice arrives, with daylight hours varying by location. While days will begin to lengthen, temperatures are expected to remain low as winter continues.

The winter solstice brings the shortest day and longest night of the year to Australia, as the Earth's axis tilts the southern hemisphere furthest from the sun. Daylight hours differ across cities, with Hobart receiving the least sunshine, and Sydney experiencing just under 10 hours of daylight. Although the amount of daylight will gradually increase after the solstice, temperatures are expected to remain low, as June and July are typically the coldest months in Australia. The Bureau of Meteorology notes that the colder weather feels more pronounced this year due to recent warmer winters, but current conditions are within historical norms.

The sun will be above the horizon for the shortest number of hours of the year, and then it's below the horizon for the longest number of hours of the year. Just how much daylight you get depends on how north or south you are. Hobart will have the least amount of sunshine, Melbourne will see about 9.5 hours of daylight, a little bit more in Canberra, while it'll be light for 9 hours and 53 minutes in Sydney. So what's the sunny side of the winter solstice? The amount of daylight we get each day is going to increase from Sunday. Just don't expect it to get warmer quite as quickly. We're only at the start of winter and June and July tend to be the coolest months in Australia. Not great news in a winter that's feeling especially long. Freezing. It's definitely been so cold. Definitely needing to wear the socks, tracky pants, slinglets, jumpers, everything. It doesn't stop you from going in? Not at all, no. According to the Bureau of Meteorology, it's all relative. We've become accustomed to something a little bit warmer than it has been and now with this return to something that is more normal in the historical sense of times, I think we're noticing it more.
