While some, particularly from the European People's Party (EPP), support the withdrawal due to concerns about regulatory burdens on businesses, others—including Social Democrats, Greens, and Liberals—have criticized the decision, warning it could undermine the Commission's majority. The Commission has indicated it may reconsider if micro-enterprises are excluded from the directive, but the final outcome depends on ongoing negotiations between EU institutions.

The directive aims to combat greenwashing by controlling terms like eco-friendly and natural. The proposal on green claims is to ensure a better protection to consumers and to ensure competitiveness of the European firms, because we want to substantiate a claim which says this product is very green, this product is very sustainable, it's good, but if you say it, if you go on the market saying that, you have to follow a procedure that allows us to make sure that what you claim is really true. The controversy follows several Commission U-turns on environmental policies. One German MEP confirms that the EPP wants the proposal withdrawn. The EPP thinks it's good when the Commission will withdraw this piece of legislation because it's stemming from the old time where Commission thought we cannot have enough environmental legislation and we have seen that business, in particular SMEs, are overloaded with all the complexities. Meanwhile, Social Democrats, Green and Liberal MEPs condemn what they see as the EPP conservatives aligning with the far right and threaten to break ranks with the EPP. If it confirms that the European Commission is actually withdrawing this proposal on the sole reason that it gives in to a majority built by the conservative with the extreme right groups, this is the moment where von der Leyen is losing the support of her own majority of Liberals, Social Democrats, Greens and her own EPP group. The Commission may renegotiate if micro-enterprises are excluded. I hope that there is room for agreement between the three institutions and the message coming from the Commission was that if it was such a relevant change in the discussion, the Commission may take into consideration a withdrawal of the directive. It remains to be seen whether the Council will give in to the Commission's pressure.
