A large hailstorm swept through south-east Queensland and northern NSW with winds strong enough to lift backyard trampolines. The weather bureau is warning that more wild weather is on the way.

Severe storms moved through south-east Queensland and northern New South Wales, producing hailstones up to five centimetres wide and leaving more than 4,000 homes without power. The storms, which included wind gusts of up to 85 kilometres per hour, prompted weather warnings and caused minor damage such as backyard trampolines being lifted by the wind.

While the skies cleared following the storms, meteorologists warn that the region is entering a period of increased thunderstorm activity as summer approaches. Residents are being urged to prepare for more unpredictable weather in the coming months.

Wild storms wreak havoc across Queensland and NSW

The undeniable sound of a storm rumbling across south-east Queensland, as hailstones fell from the Sunshine Coast down to northern New South Wales. Balls of ice layered backyards and reached as large as five centimetres wide. That storm, we observed some large hail around Ipswich and Springfield, and then possibly giant hail as it went through Sanford and Caboolture. More than 4,000 homes left without power as the clouds swept through. We went for a pretty big warning from much of south-east Queensland during Saturday afternoon and evening. That warning was in place for three hours, with winds strong enough to lift backyard trampolines. We did get gusts up to around 80 to 85 kilometres an hour as it went through Ipswich. But it's not the first storm Queenslanders have seen, as some use the night to have some fun, throwing a bodyboard down and carving it up in their own backyards. The last warning was cancelled at about 6pm, but those storms continued to move northwards as we went through Saturday night. Many sitting from the balconies watching the event unfold. While the skies are back to blue this morning, it may not be long until a repeat. We are very much heading into the time of year where we do see a lot more thunderstorms about, as we go into the back end of October, November into December.
