The article highlights eight company leaders covering the spectrum of tech that it takes to build the AI boom we saw this year, from the chips made by NVIDIA to the infrastructure built by Oracle, and the AI models many of us now use like OpenAI. Time says it chose to put a spotlight on people it says spent the year, quote, transforming the present and transcending the possible. Charlie Campbell joins me now. He's an editor at large for Time and one of the co-authors of the article. Charlie, thanks for being here. Why did you and your colleagues at Time choose to recognize the Architects of AI this year? Hi, Lindsay. Every fall, Times editors and reporters get together and we have a robust debate about possible candidates for Person of the Year, and typically the entertainment team is pushing for a Hollywood star and the sports team is maybe pushing for a ball player or someone like that. But this year, it really felt that it was hard to read or watch anything without being confronted with the news about the rapid advancement of AI and the people driving it. This was a year when artificial intelligence full potential roared into view. It became clear that there was no turning back or opting out. So no one really, for us, has had a greater impact than the individuals who imagined, designed, and built AI. And we really wanted to recognize that force, which for better or for worse, has unleashed a million debates about how disruptive and how impactful this technology is. Why start your piece with NVIDIA's Jensen Huang? Well, I mean, we went out to so many different people to report this piece, but Jensen was always at the top of our list because NVIDIA being the world's first $5 trillion company, it's breaking boundaries, and the entire industry remains hooked on its chips. And NVIDIA not only is a central to the AI industry, but it's become a massive force in geopolitics and a constant center of discussion between the leaders of the US and China. And coming from Taiwan is very significant with the future of the self-ruling island there. Yeah, we really felt that NVIDIA was a key anchor in the story. You write that these AI titans are, quote, all gas, no brakes, and you also write the word frightening to describe AI advancements. What are the pros and cons and the fact that there are really at this point very few guardrails for the tech? Well, this is a big part of the story that this is a year where a lot of the guardrails were removed. We see a big shift from the Trump administration compared with the Biden administration in terms of really unleashing the potential of AI and empowering these tech titans to do what they will with the technology. And there will no doubt be massive benefits in terms of productivity and boosted GDP, but also there are a lot of worrying trends as well in terms of social upheaval, the effects on individuals, education. And so we wanted to sort of expound a lot of these, you know, contrasting impacts in the story. Charlie Campbell, thank you.
