For the past four or five years, all the hype about new cars has been about EVs. But as the spring 2024 car buying season begins, hybrids that use gas and electricity are now the hottest thing again.

The recent shift in consumer preferences in the automotive industry highlights an interesting trend as hybrids, vehicles that use both gasoline and electricity, are gaining popularity once more. This comes in the wake of years where electric vehicles (EVs) dominated the conversation regarding new cars. As the 2024 spring car buying season commences, it is observed that hybrids have overtaken EVs in terms of consumer demand and interest.

This resurgence of hybrid vehicles over EVs contrasts sharply with the prevalent trend over the past four to five years, where the automotive industry and potential car buyers were largely focused on electric vehicles. The reason behind this shift back to hybrids has not been explicitly stated, but it suggests a change in consumer priorities or possibly considerations related to the practicality, cost, or availability of electric versus hybrid vehicles.



Why hybrids are surging as EV sales slow

At auto shows traveling the country this spring, shoppers may notice a subtle change. The good old-fashioned hybrid right here. You can see this is the Prius. This is the one that started it all. These Toyota spokespeople are pushing the Prius, which made its U.S. debut in 2001. And other automakers are easing off the gas pedal on pure-play electric vehicles, with Mercedes delaying its plans to go all-EV and Ford slowing production of the F-150 Lightning. Auto dealership spokesman Charlie Howard says hybrids remove what's called range anxiety, a common concern that an EV will run low on power before you reach a charging station. Maybe I don't have charging options at my home, but the hybrid offers that extended range. With consumer interest in all-electric vehicles seemingly coming to a stall, prices are dropping. At the end of 2023, used EV prices were down nearly 34 percent, while the average used car price was down just 5 percent. Still, iSeeCars analyst Carl Brower says lower EV prices may not be enough to sway consumers, with hybrid prices more in line with gas-powered cars. And they get substantially better fuel efficiency than a non-hybrid vehicle. Brower says buyers today are also more comfortable with hybrid technology compared to newer EVs. Hybrids have basically every advantage right now. For now, car shopper Jenny Jennewine is deciding between gas or hybrid. Hybrid, possibly, but definitely not all-electric.
