Well, I recently tried out Google's new artificial intelligence tool, BARD, and it revealed plenty of errors, and also kind of shed some light on many of the concerns that may lie ahead with AI. Dr. Gopal Gupta heads up the Computer Science Department at UT Dallas, and co-directs the University Center for Applied Artificial Intelligence. Good morning, thanks for joining us. Thank you. All right, so last week I asked Google's BARD to write a short bio for me. And what I got back had the right name, career, and workplace, but the rest was largely incorrect. Among the things that BARD got wrong, where I'm from, when I moved to Dallas, what newscasts I appear on, it listed awards for me that I've never received, memberships I don't hold, including one with the National Association of Black Journalists. And finally, it chose a sport for me that I really don't play, and don't play very well at all, basketball. But here's the thing, you can Google me, and the results will include our website with my actual bio on it. So, can you kind of explain how these AI bots work, and why it got things so wrong? So essentially, the way they work is that, given a phrase, they try to guess the most probable word that will come afterwards. So essentially, what they're doing is that, so how do you figure out what's the most probable word that will come afterwards? They process all the billions of lines of text that is out there on the internet, and then figure out what patterns are most commonly occurring. So when it's synthesizing your bio, not only it's looking at your bio, but maybe the bio of all the other people that have jobs similar to yours. So it's going to get confused as it is assembling and trying to guess the next word. So not a surprise, it's not good for factual things, it's very good for creative stuff, like, you know, generating a story or a poem, but not so for factual stuff, where it, because it has no understanding, it cannot reason. Yeah, and Google's CEO, Sundar Pichai, actually said in an interview last week that he used it to craft an email for a refund from an airline, and he said it did very well. But he also said AI will touch everything, every sector, every industry, every aspect of our lives. But so let me ask you, how big of a threat is it that AI can be so misinformed and create these false narratives? So, I mean, so that's a big problem, that it can, you know, hallucinate and create stuff that is actually not true. It will disrupt the industry, but I think that all this talk about lots of people losing their job is sort of a little bit unfounded. It will certainly lead to reorganization, and everyone will have to recalibrate their skills. But it will increase people's productivity, but it's not going to, if anything, it will actually increase, the number of jobs will increase, I believe, so, because it will make people more productive. Well, and if you think about it, we've sort of already been dealing with this over the last several decades. I mean, you know, airlines used to have four people in the cockpit of a commercial airline jet. Now they only have two, and basically computers do most of the work on that anyway. You know, humans used to build automobiles by hand, and now machines do it. So we've sort of, you know, gotten used to transitioning away from humans. Not that that's a great thing, but some say, you know, don't be too scared of AI. Absolutely, you should not be. I mean, automation always leads to increased number of jobs. I would say if you look at our history of the past 250 years, that's what has happened. Every time, you know, there's been automation, the number of jobs has increased. I mean, so agriculture mechanized, but then lots of jobs were created in the food processing industry that I think employs something like 15% of, that accounts for 15% of the manufacturing jobs. So these kind of things will happen. I mean, if you have new tools, I believe it's going to create more jobs. I mean, certainly there will be a disruption, and everybody will have to, as I said, recalibrate, but the number of jobs are not going to be reduced. Jobs are not going to go away. It's not going to take away your job. They just need to work out the kinks. Absolutely, but these kinks will never be worked out because, you know, the way the tool works is it's purely by pattern matching. It has no understanding. So no matter how you make the tool to be, you actually need to bring in reasoning, and that's the next generation of AI tools, one could say.
