The Portuguese National Institute for Nature Conservation and Forests reported that, as of mid-July, the area burned was already three times higher than the same period the previous year. Across the EU, wildfires have burned an average of 3,770 square kilometres annually between 2000 and 2024, costing the bloc an estimated 2.5 billion euros each year.
