Employment in the sports industry across the European Union has increased, with a 6.5% rise between 2023 and 2024, reaching 1.6 million people. Sweden has the highest proportion of its workforce in the sector at 1.5%, followed by Denmark and Spain, while Romania, Bulgaria, and Czechia have the lowest figures. 

More than one-third of sports industry workers are aged between 15 and 29. Although employment numbers for both men and women declined during the COVID-19 pandemic, they have since recovered. However, gender inequality remains a persistent issue, with women underrepresented in both overall employment and top decision-making roles within national sports federations.

Where in Europe are employment levels in the sports industry highest? The number of sports-related jobs is growing in the European Union. Between 2023 and 2024, employment in the sector rose by 6.5%, reaching 1.6 million employed people last year. Sweden leads the way with 1.5% of its workforce being employed in the sports industry, followed by Denmark with 1.37% and Spain with 1.17%. By contrast, Romania, Bulgaria and Czechia recorded the fewest people working in this sector. Last year, more than one-third of all people working in the sports sector were aged between 15 and 29 years old. Both men and women saw a drop in employment in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, but numbers recovered in 2022. Gender inequality is, however, a long-standing problem here, and it has even widened since 2011. In 2024, over 900,000 men were working in sport, compared to just over 700,000 women. Women also remain underrepresented in top positions. In 2024, women held fewer than a quarter of top decision-making roles in national sports federations across the EU's 10 most popular sports, ranging from just under 8% in Slovenia to 51% in Sweden.
