There have been no funds for bollard installation services due to city budget issues, Downtown residents told ABC 10News they often see traffic having close encounters with pedestrians on Fifth Avenue.

San Diego's initiative to install bollards along Fifth Avenue in the Gaslamp Quarter has been delayed due to a lack of city funding for installation services. The bollards, which were previously installed to improve pedestrian safety and enhance the area's atmosphere, were removed when budget issues arose, leaving pedestrians and businesses concerned about increased vehicle traffic and safety hazards.

Local residents have reported frequent close encounters between vehicles and pedestrians, and some have noted additional risks from missing lids at crosswalks. The Gaslamp Association is now considering private funding sources to revive the project, emphasizing the benefits the bollards brought to both safety and local businesses.

When are the downtown bollards coming back?

These are the bollards. These are where the bollards are supposed to go, but without the funds to pay someone to install them, these ever growing summertime San Diego crowds will have to stick to the sidewalk. That is, unless they find funding from a different source other than the city. Well, some didn't know what the short lived gas lamp promenade looked like. Yeah, I can't even imagine no traffic through here. Others remember when Fifth Avenue was a pedestrian paradise, but just brings a better environment overall into the gas lamp. More fun. The bollards in the gas lamp quarter were installed in 2023 by the streets being open and allowing people to walk. They're able to find their way a little bit further down Fifth Avenue from the convention center and the ballpark. So it did open up business for us a little bit better there, but city budget issues shut it down with no funds to pay for installation services. The bollards were sent to the sidewalk along with everyone else. You need to feel like this is a safe place. It's downtown, right? This is where all the events happened. Downtown residents told abc 10 news. They often see traffic having close encounters with pedestrians on Fifth Avenue. We checked with S. T. P. D. To confirm this and are waiting to hear back. Other concerns were the missing lids, turning crosswalks into tripping hazards, twist his ankle or something like that. Um, and and the whole, yeah, and the whole and you know, kids not paying attention. Michael Trimble with the Gaslamp Association told me moving forward, they're exploring options for private funding and that this is a project years in the making and they don't want to give up on it now. We'd love to have them back. Yeah, you know, it definitely was beneficial to our business. You know, again, giving the customers the ability to kind of wander without dealing with the crowds that get congested on the sidewalks, you know, would absolutely be a benefit to us in the big picture in the gas lamp quarter.
