In New York, health officials have confirmed 90 cases, including three deaths and 17 hospitalizations, with the source traced to cooling towers on multiple buildings. The disease is not spread person-to-person but through mist from contaminated water sources, and symptoms can take up to two weeks to appear.

In Michigan, the exact number of cases remains unclear, but concern is high due to the vulnerability of older adults. Health authorities are proposing stricter regulations for cooling towers in affected areas. The report also briefly notes unrelated cases of flesh-eating bacteria infections in Florida and Louisiana, emphasizing preventive measures for those at risk.

What to know about Legionnaires' disease breakouts

Now to some developing health news. While cold and flu season is still months away, a dangerous type of pneumonia called Legionnaire's disease is currently hitting communities in New York and Michigan. CBS News correspondent Chanel Call has been looking into these outbreaks. Chanel, good to see you again today. What do we know at this point? Yeah, some important information here. Let's start with what's happening here in New York, Mugo, where there is an outbreak now of Legionnaires in Central Harlem. The New York City Department of Health is saying that there are now 90 confirmed cases, including three deaths at this point, and 17 people, we're told, have already been hospitalized. Now, if you're not aware, Legionnaire's is a pretty severe and potentially deadly form of pneumonia. Here's what happens. It grows in warm, stagnant water, and then it spreads through mist in the air. I do wanna note, it doesn't spread from person to person, so you don't have to be worried about that, but some of the symptoms to be aware of include cough, fever, chills, muscle aches, and shortness of breath. But important to note that those symptoms could take two weeks to show up for certain people, so you wanna keep a close eye on this if you are worried about exposure. Now, how did this happen? Well, officials, Mugo, believe that this particular outbreak has been traced back to cooling towers on 11 buildings in Central Harlem. The city now proposing some stricter rules for those cooling towers. We're also tracking another Legionnaire's outbreak, this one in Michigan, you mentioned this, and this one happened at a senior living home in Dearborn. At this point, Mugo, it is still unclear exactly how many people were infected there, but it is a big concern because people over the age of 50 are at high risk. All right, Chanel, let's talk about a different outbreak in Southern United States. What have you learned about these cases of flesh-eating bacteria in both Florida and Louisiana? Yeah, I mean, this is so terrifying, right, Mugo? Most of these cases here in the US, they happen in Gulf Coast states, but health officials are now warning that hurricanes, storm surges, things like Hurricane Helene that we saw last year, that can actually push coastal waters inland, essentially increasing the risk of infection to a much broader, a much wider swath of people. Florida now confirming 13 cases this year with eight deaths due to this bacteria, and officials, Mugo, have said eight cases were actually tied to wound exposure, but they also were stressing that these kinds of infections are, quote, sporadic and unrelated to an outbreak. Nearby in Louisiana, they are reporting 17 cases, and all of them there have now resulted in those people being hospitalized. Four people there in Louisiana have died. The local health department is saying there are a couple of things you can do to try to protect yourself in this situation. So, you know, stay out of brackish or saltwater if you have an open wound. Definitely use caution when you're eating raw or undercooked seafood, which, you know, a lot of people will do over the summer months, and always wash your hands with soap and water after handling any kind of raw shellfish. So, some good reminders to try to protect you and your family during this outbreak in Louisiana and Michigan right now. Yeah, definitely. Chanel Call, thank you so much for your reporting.
