A severe heatwave is affecting New South Wales, with temperatures in Sydney expected to reach up to 44°C and statewide highs predicted at 47°C. Health and emergency services are increasing resources in response to the dangerous conditions, which are forecast to persist due to a blocking high-pressure system.

Officials have warned the public to take precautions, including avoiding leaving children in cars and exercising only during cooler parts of the day. The heatwave is impacting much of Australia, with South Australia and Victoria also experiencing extreme temperatures.

The next few days are going to be potentially very, very difficult and dangerous. We are going to see searing temperatures. Across Sydney up to 44 degrees. Across the state, the mercury tipped to hit 47 degrees. No child, no child should be left in a car over the next few days for any length of time. It's a rare prolonged hit with the forecast daytime highs up to 16 degrees above average. The nights will be warm too, up to 15 degrees above average. That is a very, very dangerous and hot heatwave. New South Wales Health will be bolstering their resources as will New South Wales Ambulance. It's part of a severe heatwave blanketing almost the entire country. It today had South Australia and Victoria in its grip. I'm a Canadian from Toronto and I am melting. Thank you Australia. Temperatures in the low to mid 40s had English tourists thinking of home. Apparently it's minus 5 and snowing. I'm flying back tomorrow so that will be a nice 50 degree change. What we've seen this week is a stubborn big area of high pressure which has been blocking any cold fronts coming up from the Southern Ocean and it's those cold fronts that can flush out that heat, but we're not going to see that until early next week. Banana lounging is one thing, but if you do plan on exercising, even the young, fit and healthy are being advised to do it early or late, not during the middle of the day. And as many race to cool down, experts are urging everyone to stick to patrolled locations. We'll have extra patrols on, we'll have roving jet skis out there on the water, we'll have roving duty officers as well, but prevention is better than doing a rescue and we can do that by making the right decisions.
