The incident has reignited tensions in Minneapolis, a city previously at the center of national protests following the death of George Floyd.

The bystander video shows federal immigration agents profanely ordering a woman out of her car. She turns and swerves away from them. One officer approaches from the front of the vehicle and fires. The SUV strikes a utility pole and stops. The female driver is later declared dead. The windshield showing the bullets entered at an angle from the side. The interpretation of the video instantly divided the country. The head of the Department of Homeland Security says it shows domestic terrorism. A woman attacked them and those surrounding them and attempted to run them over and ram them with her vehicle. An officer of ours acted quickly and defensively shot to protect himself and the people around him. President Donald Trump posts that the driver viciously ran over the ICE officer who seems to have shot her in self-defense. Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey watching this same video sees an execution. They are already trying to spin this as an action of self-defense. Having seen the video of myself, I want to tell everybody directly, that is bulls**t. His response is emotional and profane. To ICE, get the s**t out of Minneapolis. We do not want you here. Your stated reason for being in this city is to create some kind of safety and you are doing exactly the opposite. It's the latest deadly confrontation between federal immigration agents, in this case 2,000 of them, flooding the streets where they are not welcomed by local officials in democratically controlled cities that have declared themselves a sanctuary for immigrants. This time it happened in the city that unleashed a nationwide protest movement in 2020 after a white police officer, later convicted of murder, suffocated George Floyd, a black man accused of counterfeiting. As protesters gather again, ICE agents confront them, firing pepper spray, snowballs chasing their fleeing cars. Minnesota's governor urged calm. And so to Minnesotans, don't take the bait. Do not take the bait. Do not allow them to deploy federal troops into here. Do not allow them to invoke the Insurrection Act. But the restless streets of Minneapolis are already filling with angry citizens calling for justice and the prosecution of an ICE agent. John Hendron, Al Jazeera.
