Western Australia's coral reefs are experiencing unprecedented bleaching as a marine heatwave hits the region. Experts warn bleaching events are becoming more frequent and put biodiversity at risk.

Western Australia's coral reefs are undergoing their most severe bleaching event to date, according to recent surveys along the coast. The bleaching, attributed to a record-breaking marine heatwave, has affected up to 60% of coral at Ashmore Reef and caused significant damage at Rowley Shoals and Ningaloo Reef.

Experts warn that the scale, intensity, and duration of this event are unprecedented for the region. While reefs can recover from bleaching over about a decade, the increasing frequency of such events is making full recovery less likely, threatening long-term biodiversity.

WA's vibrant coral reefs, once a selling point, now a global warming wake-up call. There is no hope for them to be as they have been 10 or 20 years ago. We are seeing them change, we will lose a large amount of biodiversity, we will lose a large number of corals. A string of surveys up our coast have found the worst coral bleaching WA has ever seen, caused by a record-breaking marine heatwave over summer. We've certainly had marine heatwaves and significant coral bleaching in Western Australia in the past, but we've never had a situation where we've had it over such a large spatial extent or the intensity or the duration that it's occurred this year. Off northern WA at Ashmore Reef, up to 60% of the coral was affected. In and around Rowley Shoals was hardest hit, but even WA's prized Ningaloo Reef couldn't escape the damage. They can recover given a chance. We know generally speaking that it takes about a decade for a reef to recover from a severe bleaching event, but unfortunately what we're seeing now is that bleaching events are happening every few years.
