A skydiver experienced a serious parachute malfunction during a 16-person formation jump at an air show in Queensland, Australia. The reserve parachute accidentally deployed as the skydivers exited the plane, causing one to become entangled with the aircraft's stabilizer.

The skydiver used a hook knife to free himself and managed to regain control despite further entanglement with the main parachute. Both the skydiver and the plane landed safely, with only minor injuries reported and minor damage to the aircraft.

Cool under pressure does not begin to describe a skydiver's actions after a major malfunction in midair. CBS's Tom Hanson has the video showing the drama as it unfolded back in September. It was meant to be a highlight of an Australian air show. 16 skydivers in formation jumping from 15,000 feet. But just as the cameraman and first skydiver stepped out of the door, things went terribly wrong. A reserve parachute inadvertently deployed, knocking the camera operator into freefall and flinging the skydiver into the plane's stabilizer on the wing. An investigation by Australia's Transport Safety Bureau found the handle on the reserve parachute snagged on the airplane's flap, leading it to deploy. While dangling from the Cessna, luckily the skydiver was carrying a hook knife, not mandatory gear for parachuting. He was able to saw through the lines of the reserve chute until it finally broke free. But when the main parachute did deploy, it got tangled with the remnants of the reserve canopy. Finally, a break. The parachutist was able to untangle the lines and gain control. They suffered minor injuries and the Cessna had some minor damage, but both skydivers and the plane landed safely.
