Venezuelan Vice-President Delcy Rodríguez has been sworn in as the country’s interim president following an emergency ruling by its Supreme Court. Initially calling ousted President Nicolás Maduro's capture a violation of international law, Rodríguez is now offering to co-operate with U.S. President Donald Trump on the next steps for Venezuela’s government.

Venezuela's Supreme Court has appointed Rodriguez as interim president for 90 days, following a ruling that President Maduro is temporarily unable to fulfill his duties. Rodriguez has indicated a willingness to establish a balanced relationship with the United States, proposing a broad agenda of cooperation that could include reopening the U.S. embassy and addressing political prisoners.

The U.S. government, under President Trump, has announced support for Rodriguez rather than opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, who has recently moderated her stance. Negotiations are ongoing between the Venezuelan opposition and the U.S. regarding the possibility of new elections, while the opposition appears unprepared for the recent developments.

Venezuela's interim president willing to collaborate with U.S. government

Well, Rodriguez's swearing in is based on a ruling, an emergency ruling by Venezuela's Supreme Court that says that President Maduro is temporarily unavailable to fulfill his duties. So Rodriguez has basically been given 90 days as interim president that can be extended for another three months with a vote from Venezuela's National Assembly. What she's saying, she's changed her tune towards the U.S. overnight, basically. So what she's saying now is that she's looking to establish a balanced relationship with the United States based on respects for both nations and wants to establish a broad agenda of cooperation. What will this agenda mean? We'll have to see in the following days. It could mean the U.S. reopening its embassy in Venezuela, for instance, recognizing the Venezuelan government, which they don't recognize. And also we'll have to see if there will be any moves with regards to oil companies, with regards to the liberation of political prisoners in Venezuela, and if the Rodriguez, the new Rodriguez government, will agree to establish new elections. That's a key point that we don't know yet if it will happen. When Trump gave his press conference on Saturday after the attack and said he would be working with Rodriguez and not with opposition leader Maria Corina Machado, it was a pretty shocking development. It just made it look like the opposition has totally been sidelined. Machado, who was recently given the Nobel Peace Prize for her efforts to restore democracy in Venezuela, has been relatively quiet. She published a message a few minutes ago thanking President Trump for arresting Maduro and saying that liberty to Venezuela will come soon. But this also contradicts a previous message she had issued on Saturday after the attack, where she was saying that her protege, Edmundo Gonzalez, should be immediately installed as president of Venezuela. Now, if you recall, there was an election in Venezuela in 2014, which the evidence shows that the opposition clearly won with around 70% of the vote. What the opposition is saying is that since they won the election, but Maduro stayed in power regardless, they should be given power right now. That's what Maria Corina Machado was saying on Saturday. She's kind of scaled that back. What seems to be happening here is that there are negotiations between the Venezuelan opposition and the U.S. government over whether the U.S. is really going to insist on a timeline for a new election or what will happen next. But yeah, the opposition has been caught flatfooted, I think, by this situation somehow. Journalist Manuel Rueda in Colombia's capital.
