I don't know. Yelling, the chaos, the emotion. They're still etched in our memory. Five years later, these aren't the steps of the U. S. Capitol. But the events of what happened there on January 6 2021 still reverberate here in Utah today. It's a reminder of how crazy the world can get, you know, and how divided we can be and still are. Jake Pert said he traveled from the Tocqueville area to Washington D. C. That day to attend his first Trump rally. He said emotions ultimately got the best of him and others that day, and he was among those entering the Capitol during the January 6 attack. Pert was among the January 6 participants pardoned by President Trump when he returned to office. He said he doesn't believe in regrets, but he said he was changed by that day. I hope I love people more. That's what I hope. Uh, I, um, I don't care about politics anymore. Yeah, I love our country still of our country still of America. But I also see there's a lot of other perspectives and that we should look at others individually and care about it. You know, like we get too tied up in, uh, demonizing all sides and everybody and causing all sorts of problems. Brady Knowlton also entered the Capitol that day. You may look at it as a riotous calamity. Others may look at it as a day that people were unsure that they were exercise that they were participating in self government and decided they wanted. They were no longer gonna be governable. Norton was a resident of Cameron Valley then and now divides his time between their Texas and Mexico. It was a great day. I felt I felt very alive. I felt that it helped process the experience that I think that America was having. Jeff Allen doesn't agree because I don't think the average person looked at January 6th and said, Oh, this is a good thing. He's the chairman of the Washington County Democratic Party and was a professor at the University of Utah in 2021. He said he remembers having a hard time explaining to students that what was happening was not normal. I think what they don't see, though, is anybody articulating to them why it's wrong. Democracy requires the ability for one side to accept that they lost. Five years later, a lot of divisions still remain. Can that ever change? I think we need to set aside a lot of our political differences and we need to find the commonality that we that we possess is American. I'm sad that we aren't unified and that we don't care more about each other from ST George. Chris Reed, FOX 13 News Utah.
