The United States has carried out a military operation, named Operation Midnight Hammer, targeting three major Iranian nuclear sites: Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow. According to U.S. officials, the strikes involved bunker buster bombs and Tomahawk missiles, resulting in severe damage to the facilities. President Donald Trump authorized the operation after negotiations with Iran over a new nuclear deal stalled.

U.S. Vice President J.D. Pence stated that the attacks were not directed at the Iranian people and were not intended to bring about regime change. The legality of the strikes is being debated, with some alleging a breach of the U.S. Constitution, as only Congress can declare war. Resolutions are expected to be filed in Congress to prevent further escalation, while the administration faces the challenge of reassuring the public about its intentions in the Middle East.

U.S. attacks on Iran ‘not about regime change’

It was called Operation Midnight Hammer, a combination, the Americans say, of deception and overwhelming firepower. We devastated the Iranian nuclear program. Fourteen massive ordnance penetrator bombs known as MOPs, or bunker busters, were used, as well as Tomahawk missiles fired from U.S. submarines at three Iranian nuclear sites, Isfahan, Natanz, and Fordow. Assessments are still being made on the damage inflicted. Initial battle damage assessments indicate that all three sites sustained extremely severe damage and destruction. Defense Secretary Pete Hexeth says Donald Trump gave the go-ahead when he believed negotiations with the Iranians over a new nuclear deal were going nowhere. The president announced the operation had been carried out in a nationwide television address late on Saturday night. He promised a final decision on joining the Israeli war in Iran within two weeks. It came in just two days. And saying it was not open-ended, but warning the Iranians to negotiate. There will be either peace or there will be tragedy for Iran far greater than we have witnessed over the last eight days. Remember, there are many targets left. Vice President J.D. Pence says this is not an attack on the Iranian people and not about regime change and rejected the idea Trump broke the law taking this action. The idea that this was outside of presidential authority, I think any real serious legal person would tell you that's not true. I certainly empathize with Americans who are exhausted after 25 years of foreign entanglements in the Middle East. I understand the concern, but the difference is that back then we had dumb presidents and now we have a president who actually knows how to accomplish America's national security objectives. Donald Trump is facing allegations that he breached the Constitution because only Congress can declare war. In both chambers on the Hill on Monday, resolutions will be filed calling for no further escalation or conflict. But Donald Trump's biggest battle may well be convincing people who voted for him that the man who argued against stupid Middle East wars is not about to be dragged into another.
