A new law in Utah now prohibits the use of cellphones during classroom instruction across public schools. Districts are implementing the policy with varying rules depending on grade level: high school students must keep phones silent and out of sight during class, but can use them during lunch and passing times; elementary students must keep phones powered down and hidden for the entire day; and middle schoolers may use phones at lunch but not during class or passing periods. 

The initiative, signed by Governor Spencer Cox, is intended to minimize distractions and reduce online harassment in schools. Some districts, such as the Jordan School District, sought feedback from teachers, parents, and students before finalizing their policies. Exceptions are permitted for emergencies and students with medical needs, and families are encouraged to review their local district's guidelines.

In April, Governor Spencer Cox signed on for bringing a cultural shift in public schools, making classroom instruction time cell phone free. You're not going to be able to learn algebra if you're trying to pay attention to what your friends are texting you. Districts are rolling out specific rules for each grade level. And they vary. In high schools, we're asking our students to put those phones away and put them on silent. Students can use their phones before and after school, during lunchtime, during passing times. In the Canyons District, posters around the school and emails are being used to remind everyone about the policy. And the rule changes depending on grade levels. In Canyon School District elementary schools, students can bring the phones, but they will need to be powered down and kept out of sight throughout the entire day. Middle schoolers will need to keep phones silent and put away during class and passing time. But those phones can come out during lunch. It's not just going to reduce the distraction in the classroom, but it's going to reduce instances of that online harassment. The Jordan School District began working on its policy before the state law took effect, surveying teachers, parents and students to get feedback. This will be an opportunity to see how that goes, and we're open to feedback. The state law allows exceptions for emergencies and students with medical needs.
