In this web exclusive, Nora Guthrie, daughter of legendary singer-songwriter Woody Guthrie, explains to correspondent Lee Cowan how she discovered the original handwritten lyrics of her father's classic song "This Land Is Your Land" – and what happened once she took it to Kinko's.

A handwritten copy of the famous song "This Land Is Your Land" was discovered among the belongings of the songwriter's father, stored away in a school notebook binder with other lyrics. The discovery was made years later when the songwriter's child was encouraged to look through the family archives. 

During an attempt to make a copy of the original lyrics at a copy shop, the document was accidentally left behind but was fortunately recovered before anyone else used the machine. This incident inspired the creation of an archive, which eventually led to the establishment of a museum in Tulsa to preserve such important musical artifacts.

Uncovering the lyrics of "This Land Is Your Land"

Did you expect to find the handwritten copy? I mean wait, tell me how that how that all came about When my father got sick, my mother put a lot of his stuff in boxes. And of course as kids The last thing we're interested in is our parents nothing ever interested me It wasn't until I was about 40 somebody gave them to me and said you ought to look through your dad's stuff and I went No, okay, I guess I'm old enough now and then I found this original Lyric handwritten of this land is your land in one of these school notebook binders with the three gluey things that you put yeah, no, but with like 75 other lyrics Nothing not pulled out not special just one song after another and then there's this land So I took it out of the binder and I said I want to make a copy of this and show it around So I was on 57th Street and I went to Kinko's Make a copy. I Put it in the machine the copier Took the copy and went back and left and I realized later that I had left the original lyric and the Kinko's copier machine Oh my gosh Yeah, you do. I Went back down to Kinko's and hoped it was still there and luckily no one else had made copies than the last hour So it was still in the same machine where I left it but Fate this is the trouble with the kids of right because it's like yeah, it's this land is your land I mean if I tell you all the things that I've ruined destroyed or lost of my father's Yeah, yeah But that was that was a tough one Luckily God was on my side and gave it back to me and said now get to work and do something Nora And that's when I started the archives Yeah, and then the archives built into the museum in Tulsa, etc, etc So that was that's what started it. That really is almost losing it. Oh, yeah. No, it's like You better take care of this stuff like okay
