Humanity is finally starting to bring down emissions, but not nearly fast enough. That's according to analysis from the United Nations that shows that if countries follow through on their climate plans for 2035, emissions will fall by around 10% from 2019 levels. Countries are making progress and laying clear stepping stones toward net zero emissions, but must urgently pick up the pace. According to scientists, greenhouse gas emissions when trapped in the atmosphere create a blanket of heat, melting ice, affecting water cycles and shifting weather patterns. This year alone, extreme weather impacted all continents on Earth. From snowstorms that blanketed much of the United States and Asia, to deadly floods in Spain, Somalia and Australia to name a few. As well as the catastrophic wildfires and forceful hurricanes that ravaged livelihoods and economies. But the bright light, according to the UN, is that the opportunities for climate action are monumental. Market logic dictates that the clean energy transition will continue at great scale and pace, but an equitable global transition where every country benefits from clean energy and climate resilience requires clear policies and plans across every country and every sector. Ahead of the COP30 summit in Brazil, only 64 countries have submitted new carbon cutting plans, as required under the 2015 Paris Agreement. Of the world's two biggest emitters, China's not yet finalised target to cut its output by between 7% and 10% of its peak is widely viewed as too weak. While the United States is also expected to scrap its pledge altogether under US President Donald Trump.
