Israel has launched more than 600 air, drone or artillery attacks across Syria in the past year, averaging nearly two attacks a day, that, according to information collected by the Armed Conflict Location and Event Data Organization. At a meeting of the U.N. Security Council on the situation in Syria, the message to Israel was clear, enough, stop. We remain deeply concerned by Israel's ongoing attacks in Syria, which risk further destabilizing the country. The impact of these attacks on civilians is unacceptable. Denmark urges Israel to halt its airstrikes and incursions inside Syria and to respect the 1974 disengagement of forces agreement. Israel often cites Article 51 of the U.N. Charter and the right to self-defense as justification for the attacks, but during the meeting, that was viewed with skepticism. Israel's violations of the disengagement of forces agreement are unjustifiable. There is no legal base for involving Article 51 to justify preemptive strikes in foreign territories. Israel's ambassador said Syria needs to secure its borders and also called for a demilitarization zone. Syria is responsible for what happens on its soil. What we are asking for is simple, the immediate creation of a demilitarized zone stretching from Damascus to the existing buffer area, including across Mount Hermon and its summit. To which Syria's ambassador responded with this. It is actually Israel that's preventing us from accessing our territory to be able to exert control. Two very contradicting statements, a demilitarized zone, and still you should manage your own security. I'm not sure, you know, I'm not a magician, but I'm not sure how that's supposed to happen. It's clear deep tensions remain between Israel and Syria. But if this meeting proved anything, it's that the majority of council members are speaking with one voice, that Israel's attacks on Syria are at best not helpful, but at worst could threaten the stability of the very government trying to rebuild the country after decades of Assad regime rule.
