Despite the violence, Christmas celebrations took place in Kyiv, marking the second year since Ukraine shifted its official holiday to December 25th to distance itself from Russian customs.

President Zelensky continued diplomatic efforts during the holiday, holding discussions with U.S. envoys and expressing hope for progress toward peace. The Kremlin is currently reviewing new peace proposals, and there is cautious optimism in Ukraine that this could be the last Christmas celebrated during wartime.

On the streets of Ukrainian cities, it was another Christmas under attack from Russian strikes. Here in Kherson, at least one person was killed after shelling hit a local market. Ukraine now officially marks the day on December 25th, after the law was changed in 2023 to move the main celebration from January 7th. As a way to further distance itself from Russian traditions. I think it's important to continue living throughout the war, to continue celebrating Christmas and other holidays. Despite the holidays, diplomatic negotiations continued. President Zelensky said it was important not to lose a single day. Today we also spoke for nearly an hour with envoys of the U.S. President, Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner. It was a truly good conversation. We went into many details. There are good ideas which we discussed. We have some new ideas in terms of formats, meetings and of course timing on how to bring a real peace closer. The Kremlin says it is looking at the latest peace proposals and there is hope, if not optimism in Ukraine, that this will be its last Christmas at war.
