Wine states that his participation in the election aims to highlight the lack of democracy in Uganda and to draw international attention to the government's conduct. Human rights organizations have described the military's treatment of the opposition as a 'brutal campaign of repression,' while Wine has vowed to continue his campaign efforts.

No, we are participating in this election to draw the attention of the world to the disrespect of democracy in Uganda, to the hypocrisy of the Ugandan government but most importantly to show the world especially development partners that every time they cooperate with a regime that has no respect for democratic principles then they are partners in crime. We are in this election because if we don't show up nobody is going to see us and if we don't speak up nobody is going to see us. Museveni's rallies are very different and he campaigns without disruption. Wine, whose real name is Robert Chiagulani, has a large following among working-class people in urban areas. Yet Museveni dismisses him as an agent of foreign interests. Mr. Chiagulani and his evil foreigners that back him fail to understand that Uganda is a land of spiritual and political matters. The spiritual matters like Karol Rwanga, ETC, the political matters like Rwanda are very good examples for the present generations. MSD International has called the military's treatment of the opposition a brutal campaign of repression ahead of the vote but Wine has vowed to continue his campaign to expose Uganda's democratic failings to the world.
