Trump's N.Y. criminal trial begins in historic first for ex-president

No matter who you are, we cannot and will not normalize serious criminal conduct. It's the first of former President Trump's four criminal cases to head to trial and possibly the only one that will be decided before voters head to the polls in November. The presumptive Republican nominee is accused of falsifying business records to cover up other crimes during his 2016 presidential campaign. This in connection with the payment made in October of that year to adult film star Stormy Daniels, aiming to keep her silent about an affair she claims to have had with Trump a decade earlier, a story that could have dimmed his White House aspirations. Trump denies having an affair. At its core, this case today is one with allegations like so many of our white collar cases. The $130,000 payment at the center of the case came from Trump's former fixer and now outspoken critic Michael Cohen, a key witness for the prosecution. If I'm representing Donald Trump, I'm making the case about Michael Cohen and can you believe him? The Department of Justice didn't even want to offer him a cooperation agreement. He lied before Congress, allegedly. He has a built in motive, maybe. Maybe if Trump gets convicted, lots and lots of books will be written and sold and so there's a financial incentive. But District Attorney Alvin Bragg's approach won't rely solely on Cohen or even a single hush money payment. The DA has pointed to other avenues. According to a report from ABC News, several people within Trump's inner circle, including his former communications chief, Hope Hicks, are expected to testify. The trial is moving forward despite several last minute efforts by Trump to delay it. The former president taking issue with its location in heavily Democratic Manhattan, a gag order against him and the judge, Juan Marchand, who Trump claims has a conflict of interest because of his daughter's work as a Democratic political consultant. It's a shame what's happening to our country. This is election interference. They are doing things that have never been done in this country before. Over the past year, the former president has created spectacles at courthouses as his legal troubles intensified. He repeatedly attacked judges and prosecutors, accusing them of going after him for political reasons. His court appearances attracting protesters both for and against him. Defeating an impartial 12-person jury could be a challenge, with a high profile and highly divisive defendant. No word yet on whether Trump himself will testify, but the trial could take him away from the campaign trail as election season heats up. He faces 34 felony counts in this case, with the possibility of up to four years in prison on each count if convicted. The trial is expected to last six to eight weeks.
