It's currently at a 30-year low with figures from Metro Police showing overall crime down 7% on the year and violent crime down 26%. That hasn't stopped Trump from leaning on law and order issues to play to his base. In March the president assembled a federal task force to crack down on crime and maximize immigration enforcement in DC. He's now calling for minors as young as 14 to be tried as adults there. As the federal capital Washington is technically under the exclusive jurisdiction of the US Congress. Since 1973 though it has been allowed a measure of autonomy including a mayor and a 13 member City Council.
