So basically Republicans Trump's political orbit They're frustrated that undocumented immigrants were counted in this in this census the president writing on truth social at 722 this morning I have instructed our Department of Commerce to immediately begin work on a new and highly accurate census based on modern-day facts and figures and importantly using the results and information gained from the presidential election of 2024 people who are in our country illegally will not be counted in the census Thank you for your attention to this matter. So what is this all a part of right? This is clearly an effort by the president by his political team to look at The effects of the census. What does the census give you it gives you congressional? Allocation of seats right the amount of representation that your state has in Congress comes from The u.s. Census right every state gets two u.s. Senators, but the House of Representatives members That's dictated by the census here a governor DeSantis of Florida For instance, he thinks he got left out a little bit because of all the undocumented immigrants The governor of Florida says that were counted in California he thinks that Florida should have another seat that it actually does Obviously, this is sounding the alarm in Democratic circles. The concern is that you could be looking at seats potentially if this goes ahead Right. I mean, this is just a social media post 40 minutes ago But if this goes ahead, you could be looking at a different congressional allocation in future elections and not to mention come 2028 your census dictates your electoral college representation How many seats does a Michigan have or a Wisconsin have how many does Arizona have all of that is factored in the census? So this is why politically this is such a significant development by the president It follows on the heels of this redistricting effort. It's now in multiple states We've talked extensively about the effort in Texas to redistrict to possibly pick up five seats for Republicans Where is vice president Vance heading to today the state of Indiana where they basically getting a temperature check on? Whether Indiana state lawmakers could be receptive to the idea of redistricting as well Democrats are attempting to counter on that front with efforts in California Maryland has talked about they may be getting it on the action as well again politically this idea of representation It remains that the hot topic here in our nation's capital and but Joe it doesn't necessarily mean though Does it that it would swing one way or the other? I mean, obviously it you know districts may change But do you think overall it's gonna tip any balance or is it just gonna redistribute where people are? I mean, is this really a danger or a benefit to one or the other party? Well, let's talk about population trends, right? Where are people moving in this country? You're seeing a lot of movement to Texas seeing a lot of movement to places like, Utah You're seeing a lot of movement to Montana and Tennessee I mean, these are typically conservative states. And where are we seeing people leave? Northeast is is losing population trends the the Midwest the Upper Midwest the Great Lakes region, Michigan Pennsylvania so this could I mean you're talking about a new census that gets updated when you factor in where people are moving and We can we know this just by the price of housing and housing trends. This could impact Representation yes in Congress, but also future electoral college maps Holly so a new census is a big deal politically, especially if it's drawn so quickly after After the last one again We'll see if this is just a social media post from the president and the world tends to move on or if the Department of Congress takes action and this would be a costly step Remember a census isn't cheap to survey Americans and get all of this data You're talking about a potentially costly enterprise and which is gonna take a long time as well doesn't happen within a week Okay Lastly before we run out of time as you mentioned so much to talk about want to talk about those tariffs that are now in Effect for so many countries
