President Donald Trump said Friday he had commuted the sentence of former U.S. Representative George Santos, who was slated to serve more than seven years in federal prison.

Former US Representative George Santos, who was serving a seven-year prison sentence for fraud and identity theft, has had his sentence commuted by President Trump. Santos had pleaded guilty to submitting false federal reports and misusing donor funds for personal expenses, leading to his expulsion from the US House of Representatives.

Trump's decision to commute Santos's sentence comes after Santos had repeatedly sought clemency. The commutation releases Santos from prison and clears his fines and probation, but he is still required to pay more than $570,000 in restitution and forfeiture.

George Santos drew scorn from within his own party after he was exposed for fabricating his entire biography, from his Wall Street resume and real estate portfolio to claims of being Jewish and openly gay. But at the time, the 37-year-old was actually struggling financially and faced eviction. He pleaded guilty in 2023 to fraud and identity theft. The charges revealed he submitted false federal reports and stole money from donors to finance an array of personal luxuries, including Botox treatments, holidays and OnlyFans subscriptions. Within months, he was expelled from the US House of Representatives with 105 Republicans joining the Democrats to vote him out. Being guilty is a step I never imagined I'd take, but it is a necessary one because it is the right thing to do. It's not only a recognition of my misrepresentations to others, but more profoundly, it is my own recognition of the lies I told myself over these past years. Santos, who had repeatedly sought clemency from Trump, saw his prison term, fines and probation completely cleared, though he agreed to pay over $570,000 in restitution and forfeiture.

The Trump administration is awaiting word from the Supreme Court after asking it to allow the immediate deployment of National Guard troops to Illinois to protect Immigration and Customs Enforcement officers. A lower court blocked the move.
