Chicago is a hellhole right now. President Trump says he plans to mobilize the National Guard to curb violence in Chicago, where early reports show at least 48 people were injured and at least eight people killed over Labor Day weekend. Well, we're going in. I didn't say when we're going in. When you lose, look, I have an obligation. This isn't a political thing. Trump made a direct appeal to the state's leader. If the governor of Illinois would call up, call me up. I would love to do it. Now, we're going to do it anyway. When did we become a country where it's okay for the U.S. president to insist on national television that a state should call him to beg for anything, especially something we don't want? Illinois Governor J.B. Pritzker called Trump's comments unhinged and insisted he would not be calling for help. According to the Chicago mayor's office, overall violent crime is down nearly 22 percent this year. And in the first six months of the year, the city has seen a 33 percent reduction in homicides and a 38 percent decrease in shootings. He has no idea what he's talking about. There is no emergency that warrants deployment of troops. In Washington, D.C., where the president has greater authority than in the states, Mayor Muriel Bowser has a different approach, ordering local coordination with federal law enforcement to the maximum extent allowable by law within the district. I'm very proud of Washington. It serves as a template, and we're going to do it elsewhere. Trump's plan may be hampered, though, by a scathing decision from a U.S. district judge that said the administration violated federal law when it sent National Guard troops to Los Angeles three months ago. The president brushed off that ruling, which the White House plans to appeal.
