Heavy rain is leading to flash flood warnings from Florida through the Carolinas.

Tropical downpours are producing ongoing flash flooding in the southeastern United States, with the most significant impacts reported in Florida, southern Georgia, and South Carolina. Flash flood warnings have been issued in cities such as Savannah and Memphis, with drenching thunderstorms and heavy rainfall leading to hazardous conditions, especially in urban areas with extensive pavement.

Temperatures in the region are generally close to or slightly below average, with some areas in the eastern Carolinas experiencing unusually cool weather for this time of year. Thunderstorm activity is expected to continue, particularly during the afternoons and evenings, as slow-moving low pressure systems persist across the region.

Tropical downpours continue to drench the Southeast

Pretty active weather in parts of the southeast with ongoing flash flooding. One big headline for the weekend, tropical downpours, still an issue into the southeast coast. We're becoming a little more restrictive, more of South Carolina, Georgia and Florida as opposed to North Carolina in this case. But again, a lot of moving parts here with some potentially heavy thunderstorms. You can see parts of Florida soaking rain, some thunderstorms. In fact, we can do more of a radar tour here in a minute on this side with temperatures that are down. We're only around 75 in Norfolk, Virginia. We've been in the 70s here for most of this week. That's rare for the first week of August in the eastern Carolinas. Meanwhile, to the west where it's been dry, we're hot, 95 in Little Rock right now, 102 in Lubbock. And as we look at the radar here, you can see lightning strikes and the current footprint of rain. So we have a few pockets of trouble, lots of drenching thunderstorms into Florida. Turning the lightning off there and you can see across the Tampa Bay some drenching rainfall up into areas around the fairgrounds and other areas here. We're going to be seeing an increase in thunderstorms here from east to west and southeast to northwest across the Tampa Metro. Drenching downpours kind of mainly hovering west of I-95. The breeze from the east is just enough to kind of pin most of the storms from the Atlantic Sea breeze a little west of the beaches. And it's certainly holding them in central and western parts of Florida near the Gulf Coast. There is a flash flood warning in Savannah and another big city is also under a flash flood warning going up into Memphis, Tennessee. Extra pavement in these areas can lead to more trouble. And you can see not only the rain that's already fallen, but now we have a heavy downpour moving back into the city from the northeast. So that's going to make the flash flooding in progress even worse there in Memphis, Tennessee. So as we move forward, the heaviest thunderstorms are going to be generally in Florida, South Georgia and southern South Carolina near the coast. We will see a little bit of this in North Carolina, too, but the heaviest thunderstorm activity will be during the afternoons and the evenings here. And overall temps very close to average for most of us. Nashville within a degree of average, Tampa within a degree of average, Orlando four below the norm. But when you're in North Carolina, you're still holding on to this unusual cool air. 83, it's still humid, but it's going to feel more like a humid September day as opposed to a humid August day. And each afternoon we'll see additional thunderstorms pop. There's a look at Saturday afternoon. They come down to a bit of a minimum early Sunday and then Sunday afternoon. Here they come south parts of the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida, yet again with slow moving low pressure to the south.
