Brazil's Supreme Court has begun weighing the case against Jair Bolsonaro, the former president charged with planning a coup after losing the 2022 election. Bolsonaro could face over 40 years in prison if convicted.

Former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro is currently on trial, accused alongside seven members of his inner circle of attempting to overturn the 2022 election results with military support. Prosecutors also allege that the group drafted plans to poison current president Lula da Silva, Bolsonaro's former rival. 

The trial has intensified political tensions in Brazil, with supporters of both Bolsonaro and President Lula da Silva demonstrating outside Bolsonaro's residence, where he remains under house arrest. Bolsonaro denies any wrongdoing and claims the proceedings are politically motivated. A verdict is expected soon, with the defendants facing potential sentences exceeding 40 years if convicted.

Prosecutors accuse Bolsonaro and seven members of his inner circle of seeking to overturn the results of the 2022 election with the help of the military. They're also accused of drafting plans to poison Bolsonaro's challenger and now-president Lula da Silva. Kicking off the final stage of the trial, presiding judge Alexandra Moraes said Bolsonaro's goal was a dictatorship. It is regrettable that another coup has been attempted in Brazil's republican history, attacking institutions and democracy itself with the aim of establishing a state of emergency, a true dictatorship. Bolsonaro, who denies any wrongdoing, has repeatedly said the trial is politically motivated. Judges are due to decide Bolsonaro's fate in the coming weeks. The defendants could face over 40 years in prison if convicted.

In California on Tuesday, a jury took less than an hour to clear Cardi B of assault allegations made in a $24 million civil lawsuit. A security guard claimed the rap star attacked her in 2018.
