The issue was first detected in October on a JetBlue flight, leading to emergency procedures. Both airlines are working to upgrade the affected aircraft's software, with Jetstar reporting 90 flights impacted and Air New Zealand expecting all planes to return to service within a day. Passengers have been offered flexible rebooking, credits, or refunds.

I don't really need that. We're from Tassie, so it's all a bit overwhelming. Chaos triggered by one of the biggest aircraft recalls in Airbus history, with repercussions stretching worldwide. Airbus advised that approximately 6,000 of the 11,000 A320s that are flying today have been impacted by solar radiation. The problem first noticed on a JetBlue flight from Mexico to the United States in October when it suddenly dropped in altitude, the pilot forced to make an emergency landing. It's to do with the architecture in the software systems with the computers and it's a particular combination of software updates that have triggered this. Each plane needs a software upgrade, which takes about two hours to complete. While Jetstar has support services at most airports, engineers will have to travel as far as New Zealand to get the job done. They need to physically get on board and do that process and then carry out some flight control checks. Jetstar says 90 flights are impacted by its 34 aircraft identified with this defect. Air New Zealand has 37, but expects all aircraft to return to the sky by tomorrow evening. It's offering additional flexibility with one free booking change within seven days, a credit or refund, even for non-refundable fares. As for Jetstar... We expect to see further disruption today and maybe a little bit of minor disruption tomorrow, but we're trying to rectify the situation as quickly as we possibly can. Olivia Blunden, 10 News.
