AccuWeather's Tony Laubach reported from North Dakota ahead of what may be a busy storm-chasing day in the northern Plains.

Severe weather is forecast for the western Dakotas, with meteorologists expecting damaging winds, very large hail, and the possibility of isolated tornadoes, particularly in North Dakota. The storms are anticipated to develop in the afternoon and persist into the evening, with hail potentially reaching up to four inches in diameter.

As the storm system moves eastward, the primary threat will shift to widespread damaging winds overnight. The severe weather risk is expected to continue in the coming days, affecting eastern parts of the Dakotas and eventually western Minnesota.

Tornado threat expected in the Dakotas as severe storms arrive

It's going to be an active next several days across the Northern Plains and Midwest. That's all going to kick off today with severe weather, widespread severe weather, across the western half of the Dakotas, namely up in North Dakota where we're expecting a mix of damaging winds, very large hail, and even the potential for a couple of isolated tornadoes. I started working my way up this way from Colorado yesterday, eventually arriving in Valentine, Nebraska. I left there early this morning, I've been taking some of the back highways and working my way up, eventually crossing I-90 and continuing northbound through South Dakota, revisiting some very old chase territory for me, some areas that hold some fond memories for me and the TWISTEX team back in 2010, but we will be tracking storms on the other side of the border here in North Dakota today, expecting storms to fire late this afternoon and they will last through the evening. Early threats are going to be hail as large as three, maybe even four inches, so comparative to some of the hail I saw at the beginning of the week down in Colorado, that tornado threat will also be maximized late this afternoon into the early evening. Those storms will generate a line, a forward-moving line of storms, and that will become a bigger threat for embedded tornadoes, but it's going to be widespread damaging winds that will be the main threat through the overnight hours as that complex works its way on off to the east. Unfortunately, a similar setup tomorrow on the eastern half of the states, and we'll see those severe weather chances peak out tomorrow across North Dakota, in parts of South Dakota, and then eventually working into western Minnesota, and then I will track that storm system south through the rest of the weekend.
