U.S. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick told CBS News it was 'silly' to think free trade between Canada and the U.S. is dead, but he also suggested tariffs would remain on some Canadian goods. The countries are aiming for a trade deal in less than two weeks.

The Trump administration has maintained its tariff agenda with Canada, citing the need for Canada to open its markets further. Despite shifting demands and ongoing tensions, a top U.S. official has indicated that free trade with Canada remains possible under the USMCA framework, with most goods already entering tariff-free. However, certain sectors, such as steel and aluminum, continue to face tariffs, and negotiations have become more challenging compared to earlier talks. Both sides are continuing discussions, but significant sticking points remain, particularly regarding tariffs that have not been exempted.

U.S. President Donald Trump showing no signs of backing down from his tariff agenda as old complaints about Canada surface again adding to the already tense relationship. Canada is not open to us. They need to open their market. Unless they're willing to open their market they're going to pay a tariff. The Trump administration has repeatedly changed the goalposts around what they want from Canada in order to lift tariffs. There's not a lot of evidence. It's to the point the Prime Minister is lowering expectations that tariffs will come off even if Canada can reach a deal with the U.S. before the August 1st deadline. So far no country has reached a tariff-free deal with Trump. We can see Trump having these temper tantrums and I think people will look at that and say look there's probably nothing Carney can do to change who Trump is and to change the fact that this is the way Trump negotiates. Still the Trump administration insists this is not the end of free trade with its neighbours. No, see that's silly. We have a plan called USMCA, U.S.-Mexico-Canada agreement. Virtually 75 percent of all goods coming from Mexico and Canada already come in tariff-free. Canada has carve-outs for some tariffs related to the auto sector, border security and fentanyl covering goods that are compliant with the current free trade deal. As the U.S. suggests that will remain the case. Trump's critics are mocking his trade strategy. You know if you're over the age of five you've dealt with hucksters and con men. Everything is going to be great in two weeks. By August 1 we're going to have a deal. The American people are going to be so happy. Complete failure to understand the facts, right. Negotiations between Canada and the U.S. are expected to continue this week. At the same time the Trump team is also trying to negotiate deals with most of its trading partners. Though they say if agreements can't be reached the White House will just impose a tariff rate of their choosing. And Katie, what do we know about what's happening behind the scenes in the Canada-U.S. negotiations? I'm told that talks this go-around are more difficult than during the renegotiation of NAFTA in Trump's first term because fewer people in the president's orbit are willing to challenge his ideas. And while Canada does get some significant tariff exemptions the carve-outs do not apply to everything and it's those steel and aluminum tariffs that really remain a sticking point.
