Despite a U.S.-brokered truce between the Syrian government and Druze groups, violence has continued, prompting Syrian authorities to deploy special forces to the area.

The United Nations reports that the ongoing conflict has resulted in hundreds of deaths, the displacement of tens of thousands of people, and severe disruption to essential services such as water and electricity in the region.

U.S. says Israel-Syria agree to ceasefire, clashes continue in Sweida

U.S. Ambassador to Turkey and Special Envoy for Syria announced early on Saturday that Syria and Israel had agreed to a ceasefire. It comes after Israeli forces carried out several attacks against Syria, including in the capital Damascus, in what it called military interventions to protect the Druze minority. Clashes between armed Druze groups and Bedouin clans erupted on Sunday in the southern province of Suwayda. Government forces nominally intervened to restore peace, but ended up taking the Bedouin side against the Druze. Israel responded by launching dozens of airstrikes on convoys of government fighters and even targeted the Syrian Defense Ministry headquarters in central Damascus. The fighting came to a brief halt following a U.S.-brokered truce between Syria's government and Druze groups on Wednesday. Druze militias were responsible for overseeing internal security as government forces pulled out, but instead clashes with Bedouins flared again. Syrian Interim President Ahmad al-Shara said special forces will be deployed to Suwayda to break up clashes and resolve the conflict on the ground. The U.N. says that clashes have killed hundreds, displaced tens of thousands and severely disrupted essential services like water and electricity.
