Police in Los Angeles are searching for a gunman after a car-ramming incident outside the Vermont Hollywood Nightclub left at least 36 people injured. The suspect, identified as 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, had been ejected from the club shortly before driving his vehicle into a crowd on the sidewalk.

Bystanders pulled Ramirez from the car and assaulted him before one individual shot him in the lower back and fled. Ramirez was arrested and hospitalized for his injuries and faces charges of assault with a deadly weapon. Authorities are working to determine the motive and whether Ramirez was under the influence at the time. The search for the gunman continues.

This was the scene moments after a driver rammed his car into a crowd outside the Vermont Hollywood Nightclub in Los Angeles around 2 a.m. Saturday, injuring at least 36 people. Police tell CBS News the suspect, 29-year-old Fernando Ramirez, was kicked out of the club less than 10 minutes earlier. It's definitely not consistent with an accident. It's more consistent with an intentional act. LAPD Captain Ben Fernandez has reviewed surveillance footage of the incident. There's an individual who drives the vehicle on the wrong side of the road, right onto the sidewalk, around a bus, and just plows into all those people. Social media video shows bystanders pulling Ramirez out of the car and beating him before law enforcement arrived. Police say the bystander, pictured here, shot Ramirez in the lower back before fleeing the scene on foot. They are currently searching for that suspect. It really does complicate the situation because now we have a suspect that committed a terrible act and now he's becoming a victim because someone else decided to shoot him. Unnecessary. Ramirez, the car-ramming suspect, was ultimately arrested and taken to the hospital to remove the bullet. He's charged with assault with a deadly weapon and has not entered a plea.
