Timbuktu's celebrated manuscripts have been brought back to the city after being removed for safekeeping during a militant occupation more than a decade ago. The manuscripts, which cover diverse subjects such as Islamic theology, astronomy, medicine, and history, are recognized by UNESCO as part of the World Cultural Heritage.

During the occupation in 2012, Islamist radicals destroyed thousands of manuscripts and several UNESCO-listed buildings. The return of these documents is seen as a significant step for education and research in the region, with local authorities and scholars expressing relief and optimism for renewed study at the Ahmed Baba Centre.

The manuscripts which UNESCO has designated as part of the World Cultural Heritage cover several subjects from Islamic theology and jurisprudence, astronomy, medicine, mathematics, history and geography. I am very happy today because it is very good news to see the return of the manuscripts and to see that now we will be able to go to the Ahmed Baba Centre and continue our research and continue to learn from our manuscripts from the history of Africa. For years, the local municipal and religious authorities have asked for the return of the manuscripts.
