Fierce fighting resumed in Syria's northern city of Aleppo between government forces and Kurdish fighters for a second day on Wednesday (January 7), sending thousands of civilians fleeing and leaving at least four people dead.

Fierce clashes between Syrian government forces and Kurdish-led fighters in Aleppo have prompted the evacuation of thousands of civilians. The government has established humanitarian corridors, with civil defence estimating around 10,000 people have fled the city. 

The conflict has resulted in multiple fatalities and injuries, with both sides blaming each other for the renewed violence. Efforts to integrate the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces into Syria's central government have stalled, and authorities have suspended flights and closed highways amid concerns of further escalation.

Thousands flee Aleppo as government and Kurdish forces clash again

Thousands of civilians began fleeing Syria's Aleppo on Wednesday as fierce clashes between government forces and Kurdish fighters continued for a second day. The government opened humanitarian corridors for civilians to flee flashpoint neighbourhoods, ferrying them out on city buses. The government's civil defence rescue force said an estimated 10,000 people had fled. At least six people were killed on Tuesday in shelling between Syrian government troops and the Kurdish-led Syrian Democratic Forces. After relative calm overnight, Reuters reporters said shelling resumed and intensified on Wednesday afternoon. Aleppo's health directorate said at least four people were killed and over a dozen were wounded. Both sides blame each other for starting the latest violence. Syria's defence ministry accused the SDF of escalating attacks on army positions and residential areas, a charge the group denied, blaming what it called indiscriminate shelling by forces aligned with Damascus. The fighting comes as a plan to integrate the US-backed SDF into Syria's central government has stalled. That agreement was meant to be implemented by the end of 2025 but has seen little progress. Further violence could potentially draw in Turkey, which has threatened an incursion against Kurdish fighters it views as terrorists. Authorities have suspended flights to and from Aleppo and closed a highway to Turkey as well as halting factory operations.
