Just off Australia's west coast, lies Rottnest Island -- home to unspoiled wilderness, pristine beaches and the quokka. Holly Williams reports.

Rottnest Island, located off the west coast of Australia, is renowned for its population of approximately 10,000 quokkas. These small marsupials, related to kangaroos and standing about 20 inches tall, have gained global attention due to their seemingly 'smiling' faces, a natural feature of their lip shape. 

Quokkas have adapted well to human presence, showing curiosity and friendliness toward visitors, which has made them a favorite subject for selfies, including those taken by celebrities. Scientists note that the quokkas’ fearless nature is due to the lack of natural predators on the island, allowing them to live relatively stress-free lives.

The "smiling" quokkas winning over the world

We end tonight in the land of the platypus and the kookaburra, the wallaby and the cockatoo, the dingo and the wombat, where Holly Williams went in search of the quokka. Just off Australia's west coast lies Rottnest Island, home to unspoiled wilderness, pristine beaches and the quokka, in fact around 10,000 of them, cousins of the kangaroo but standing only around 20 inches tall. And because they seem to be smiling, quokkas have become known as the world's happiest animals. Quokka selfies have gone viral, including snaps by celebrities like Roger Federer, Margot Robbie and Logan Paul. And as we found, you don't need to be a wildlife photographer to get up close and personal with a quokka. Scientists say they're naturally curious and have adapted to being around tourists. Now the truth is the quokkas are not actually smiling, that's just a quirk of nature. But they have no natural predators on the island and that's why they're so fearless and so friendly with humans. Their lips are just shaped like that so it looks like they're smiling. Arvid Hogstrom is in charge of conservation on the island. Are they happy? The quokkas on Rottnest are pretty stress free, they live a pretty easy going life. So easy they even have the right of way on roads. The quokkas may not really be smiling, but with their own island and a charmed existence, if they could smile, they probably would.
