The problem with generative AI 'hallucinations'

ChatGPT can do anything, from draft emails to brainstorm answers to questions on a job application. The AI bot has even passed the US medical licensing exam. GPT-4, the newest model developed by OpenAI, can do even more. The AI bot is capable of tackling more complex tasks, like doing your taxes. Not only can GPT-4 process text, it can also work with images. Feeding the AI a photo of the contents of your fridge, for example, will enable it to suggest a recipe for dinner. You can also sketch a website mockup, and GPT-4 will transform your drawing into working code. But there's a flip side. Bots like ChatGPT make things up at times. It's a phenomenon called data hallucination. Sometimes, when AI bots don't know an answer, they'll refer to persons, figures, or studies that don't actually exist. AI chatbots learn a lot from the internet. The consequence is, they can be prone to reproducing hate speech and racist or sexist stereotypes. Ernie Bot, from Chinese tech giant Baidu, for instance, was reluctant to answer questions on Chinese President Xi Jinping or the country's COVID-19 policy in its first public tests in March. There's no doubt about it. AI bots can be manipulated and misused. They can be programmed to avoid certain topics or to spread fake news. And authoritarian regimes could use bots as tools to influence public opinion.
