WDIA has played a significant role in local history, including efforts to save the Lorraine Motel, now the National Civil Rights Museum. The station continues to support Memphis residents, many of whom face economic challenges, by delivering accessible information and resources. It was 62 years ago today that Martin Luther King delivered his I Have a Dream speech. Five years later, King was assassinated in Memphis. But a radio station there has been keeping his dream alive. I'm also known as your girlfriend. And you know how you can tell your girlfriend stuff? Well, they tell me things. Why are you still doing so well with this? I think people want to know. They want to become educated. And WDIA has always done that. The DJs and hosts have long been a trusted source for the majority black community here. We're giving them the information that they couldn't get anywhere else. We met Johnson inside the National Civil Rights Museum, formerly the Lorraine Motel. I still have a dream. Where Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated. The ignition in an already turbulent time for black Americans. Two decades later, the station helped to start a foundation to save the motel. We raised the money on the air telling people to donate to save the Lorraine from the auction block. Today, Johnson. Good morning and welcome back. Along with a rotation of expert guests, offers information from Memphis' own doctors, lawyers and community leaders. A lot of times, my guests give information that our listeners, they can't afford it. In Memphis, one in five people live below the poverty line. And when a problem arises, they may not know where to look. But they always have WDIA. You're going to create a trust that you also own.
