Thailand has entered a new political crisis as Prime Minister Anathin Charnvirakul dissolved parliament only three months after taking office. The move follows threats of a no-confidence motion from the opposition over constitutional reforms and comes amid scrutiny of Anathin's handling of severe flooding, rising living costs, and a deadly border dispute with Cambodia.

The ongoing conflict along the Thai-Cambodian border has displaced approximately 600,000 people, with recent clashes being the deadliest since a ceasefire was brokered earlier in the year. According to Thai law, elections must be held within 45 to 60 days of parliament's dissolution, making polls likely around late January or early February 2025.

Thailand has been plunged into a fresh political crisis. After just three months in office, the country's prime minister dissolved the Thai parliament. Anathin Charnvirakul won the vote in September with the support of the main opposition People's Party in exchange for constitutional reform. They threatened to file a no-confidence motion against the prime minister over the drafting of the new constitution. Anathin is already under scrutiny over his handling of massive flooding, the cost of living and the border dispute with Cambodia. The deadly fighting which rages on has displaced around 600,000 people, mostly in Thailand. This week's clashes are the deadliest since July, before US President Trump helped broker a ceasefire. The Southeast Asian nations dispute the colonial-era demarcation of their 800-kilometre border, where both sides claim a smattering of historic temples. Whoever becomes Thailand's new prime minister will be under pressure to find a solution for this conflict. Under Thai law, elections must be held between 45 and 60 days after parliament is dissolved, meaning polls are expected around the end of January or early February.
