Military clashes between Thailand and Cambodia continue near the border town of Poipet, with Thai F-16s targeting what the air force claims are only military sites. Despite these assurances, civilians, including school children, have been affected by the ongoing violence, and neither government appears ready to de-escalate the situation. 

Efforts to broker a new ceasefire, following a previous framework led by US and Malaysian leaders, have yet to yield results. Political leaders in both countries are leveraging the conflict for domestic support, but rising casualties risk undermining Thailand's Prime Minister Anuthin Chanweerakorn ahead of an upcoming election. In Cambodia, over 10,000 people marched for peace, reflecting growing public concern over the conflict's toll.

Thailand-Cambodia fighting continues despite diplomatic efforts

Thai F-16s bombed targets on the outskirts of the Cambodian border town Poipet on Thursday. The air force say they are avoiding civilian areas, hitting only military targets. But civilians continue to get caught in the crossfire as Cambodian school children run from airstrikes 70 kilometers away from the border area. Neither side appears to be ready to step down. The Cambodian government maintains a ceasefire is possible, but only if Cambodia acts first. I think if we are going to have a ceasefire, there must be a desire on the part of Cambodians to have a ceasefire. And then we have to negotiate a ceasefire. The last ceasefire framework was brokered by US President Donald Trump and Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. Trump says a new one is imminent. Maintaining that tough stance and refusing to bow to international pressure is reaping benefits for Thailand's Prime Minister Anuthin Chanweerakorn. He's seen a popularity spike in recent weeks, vital with an election coming in less than two months. From both sides, the political parties and the governments, they tend to use this conflict as the popularity for their own. And the problem can be solved very quickly if both sides tend to have the willingness to solve the problem. For now, there seems to be little appetite for compromise amongst Thailand's politicians. But playing politics with this border conflict could be a double-edged sword. If casualty numbers continue to rise, both civilian and military, it could be a big problem for Prime Minister Anuthin in the build-up to February's election. On the streets of Cambodia's capital, Phnom Penh, more than 10,000 people came out to march for peace on Thursday.
