Thailand has become the first country in Southeast Asia to legalize same-sex marriage, in a historic parliamentary vote hailed as a "victory" by campaigners. Thailand will become only the third place in Asia where same-sex couples can get married, after Taiwan and Nepal, and activists are hoping the first weddings could be celebrated as early as October.

Of the 152 members of the Senate present, 130 voted in favor, 18 abstained, and four voted against the legislation. This move has been welcomed by advocates who believe it will significantly impact the lives of the LGBTQ community and their families.

The bill, which amends the nation's civil code to use gender-neutral terms, is set to be approved by the King and then published in the Government Gazette. Within 120 days of publication, it will become law. The prime minister applauded the decision on social media, describing it as a significant milestone.

Many LGBTQ couples in Thailand are now looking forward to planning their weddings. One couple announced their plans to marry during the 16-day period of activism. While Thailand is known for its inclusive reputation, many in the LGBTQ community have reported facing discrimination, and this legislative change is seen as a step toward greater equality.

The law will amend the nation's civil code, removing the words men and women and replacing them with the gender-neutral term individual. Many LGBTQ plus Thais say there's now a wedding to plan. My wife and I are going to marry. Come to join our wedding in November, probably during the 16th day of activism, because we are human rights defenders. While Thailand has a reputation for inclusivity, many in the community say they faced frequent discrimination. And they say that this milestone helps put the law and equality on their side, too.
