The village of Kap Chong in Thailand, located near the Cambodian border, has been largely deserted as residents flee ongoing cross-border fighting. Remaining villagers report near-constant shelling and have sought shelter, with some homes destroyed by rocket fire from Cambodia. 

The current conflict is described as more intense than previous flare-ups, including one in July that ended after a few days with a peace accord. With the collapse of that agreement, Thai authorities have reiterated that peace will only be restored when the security of their people is assured, and evacuation centers are rapidly filling with displaced villagers.

Now practically deserted, the Thai village of Kap Chong is just several kilometres from the border with Cambodia. The few people who choose to stay are mainly farmers, who now share the area with an artillery battery firing into Cambodia. I have capital I need to take care of. That's why I didn't evacuate like the others. But I sent my wife and our elders away to safety. Nearby, Chiem Tong Lo shows us what's left of his family home, after a Cambodian rocket hit it the day before. By chance, he decided to leave and visit a friend, just before it struck. Villagers here have reported nearly constant shelling since the flare-up started on Monday, with one of the heaviest barrages happening while we were filming, sending them into their makeshift shelter. Many of these villagers stayed through the most recent conflict in July and tell us the fighting this time is more intense. That flare-up ended after just a few days, and these people are hoping for a similar outcome now. The July ceasefire was cemented with a peace accord brokered by US President Donald Trump in October. But as this peace has collapsed, the emergency evacuation centres on the Thai side of the border have quickly been filling once more. Thailand has reiterated peace will only be restored when the security of its people can be guaranteed. For the people of Khachong, a ceasefire can't come soon enough. I just want the leaders to resolve this quickly and not to drag it out, so that the villagers can live peacefully and happily.
