Thailand has accused Cambodia of planting new landmines that have injured Thai soldiers, while Cambodia insists the mines are remnants from previous conflicts and dismisses the accusations.

The suspension of the ceasefire has led to intensified clashes near the border, leaving cities like Samrong nearly deserted as residents flee or seek shelter in bunkers. The area remains tense, with frequent explosions and concerns over both shrapnel and alleged use of toxic gas, as the long-standing territorial dispute continues without resolution.

If you're a Cambodian born in the 1970s or 80s, chances are you lived through war half of your life. Peacetime in this country has only been as old as the oldest Gen Z, and those conflicts have left a legacy that has yet to be fully eradicated. I'm Barnabé Lo in Siem Reap with a team of Cambodian deminers scattered across this forested area and they're here to detect landmines and other unexploded ordnances because even after decades of mine clearing operations, war explosives continue to endanger people's safety, especially those living in border areas. There are still landmines all over Cambodia and people are still afraid that they might accidentally step on them. But while their aim is to remove mines that they might find here, Thailand has accused Cambodia of planting fresh ones that have maimed some of its soldiers. The government here says those were from old minefields and for ordinary Cambodians, the Thai accusation just doesn't make sense. Because of our history, I wouldn't want anyone, Cambodian or otherwise, to get into an accident because of the landmines. Those injuries, however, have prompted Thailand to suspend a ceasefire with Cambodia and now this city, Samrong, which is close to the border where the two forces have been exchanging fire, is almost empty. A few people who remain here say the battle feels more intense than the clashes last July. During these five days of war, there have been loud explosions coming from, I'd say, a few kilometers from here. A few of Thailand's bombs have hit the neighboring town, but so far, this area has been spared. Some families here have bunkers like this and that's why they've decided to stay, but in just the few minutes that we've been here, we've been hearing very loud explosions. I do worry about shrapnel, for instance, or toxic gas, which our government has claimed Thailand is using. Amid this silence, there's certainly an air of anxiety that isn't likely to go away until a resolution is reached on this long-standing territorial dispute between Thailand and Cambodia.
