Time will tell whether this map elects more or less people of color. Race and partisanship are still at the center of the redistricting debate as the Texas Senate moves towards a full vote. Thursday's hearing started with fireworks when Republican Senator Brian Hughes called out Democrat states for their gerrymandered maps. States like Illinois, where some of the absent Texas Democrats are staging their protest. We're Texans. I really don't give a what goes on in the other community, the other state. I just care about Texas. If leaders in other states, whose voices are dutifully magnified by many in the national media, if they're going to criticize Texas and hypocritically, in the height of hypocrisy, criticize us for what we're doing, a little context is more than that. The Senate Committee heard some of the same complaints that House lawmakers heard in their meetings. Urban districts that would now sprawl even deeper into conservative rural areas. Under this new map, someone in the White House in Washington, not Texas, wants to move me into C. D. 10, which would be a district that stretches almost to Louisiana. Last week, a House committee approved the map, but the Democrat walkout has stalled any further action. Republicans and the courts have held that the redistricting for political gains is legal. But in the Senate hearing, where more than 100 people testified, most of those speakers did not see it that way. This is about taking power away from everyday Texans. Texans don't believe that our congressional maps fairly represent our communities in a statement. Lieutenant Governor Dan Patrick confirmed that they will have a full House vote.
