Telehealth operators, such as Mosh, highlight an encouraging shift, reporting an increase in the number of men who are now engaging with medical professionals for advice and treatment through online and phone consultations. The integration of telehealth services into the healthcare system appears to be making healthcare more accessible and less daunting for men, potentially leading to better health outcomes.



Telehealth helping get Aussie men back to the doctor

Daniel Glenton recently went to the barber for his first haircut in five years. Yeah, it was funny. The guy was brutal. He was donning a top knot for a little bit of time, which I was very proud of. And yeah, he questioned me twice, and on the third time, he just lobbed it off straight away. Eighteen months ago, though, the Melbourne IT recruiter looked quite different. Like almost one in three Australian men in their 30s, Daniel was starting to lose his hair. And he knew he wanted to do something about it. We talked about it quite a lot. I'd always imagined it was going to be a really expensive process. Cost thousands of dollars. According to research by online health platform MOSH, cost is just one of a number of reasons Aussie blokes are avoiding tackling medical issues. The survey of more than 2,000 men found more than half wouldn't go to see a GP because of access issues and long waiting times. And a staggering 77% reported brushing off a health concern entirely rather than talking about it. I think, broadly speaking, guys are horrible at looking after themselves when it comes to health care, and the data supports this. I think we find a lot of men aren't comfortable talking about some health conditions. In recent years, GP Dr Joanna Sharp says health care hesitancy among Australian men has started to turn around thanks to telehealth. So men seem to be accessing telehealth for conditions such as hair loss and weight loss, as well as mental health and sexual health. The availability of telehealth really allows patients to access it easily, whether it's from home, on the bus, wherever they might be. For MOSH co-founder David Narinski and his team, the increasing use of telehealth among Australian men is keeping them busy. We've treated over 100,000 patients in Australia, and I truly believe that we've pioneered a conversation around breaking down the stigma of these sorts of things. We recently went on holiday to Vietnam, a family holiday, to not have to worry about getting the top of your head burnt in the swimming pool and putting sun cream on and all of those things. It's a great feeling to have it back.
