Authorities have imposed emergency measures such as school closures and remote work, but officials acknowledge the absence of a comprehensive urban management system. Experts warn that the crisis is chronic and requires lasting solutions, as temporary actions have not alleviated the persistent public health threat.

Tehran wakes up under a toxic sky these days. Summer brought hit waves, blackouts, and fears of dry taps. And now, autumn's choking smog weighs on the residents. The air pollution has compromised life's most fundamental necessity, breathing. Hospitals and clinics are overflowing with patients struggling to breathe. I have a history of illness and over the past few days my coughing has worsened severely. With this level of pollution, I believe the entire city should be shut down. The situation you see is truly disastrous. You can't even see clearly beyond a few meters. But as employee, I have to leave my home for work. My lungs are affected and I feel short of breath. This pollution, in the long run, causes other diseases like cancer. Dr. Ali Pourvali is an immunologist. He says the situation is alarming. Most of the patients I see are those whose asthma had previously been under control but who are now suffering asthmatic attacks with shortness of breath. These episodes often lead to hospitalization and the mortality rate is high. In the past nine months, Tehran has recorded more than 130 polluted days, an increase compared to the same period last year. According to the data we have, nearly 80% of gaseous pollutants and 60% of particulate matter come from transportation. Also, in the industrial sector, pollution levies are collected but they're not actually spent on reducing industrial emissions. The state has implemented short-term emergency restrictions including school and university closures, remote work and traffic restrictions. But some city officials say an inclusive urban management system is still missing. Purchasing buses is one of the government's duties in supporting municipalities, yet it has not done so for many years. Besides buses, our priorities have included buying metro cars, adding new stations, expanding lines and electrifying the transport fleet. Beyond the haze, invisible pollutants are invading across Tehran, turning the air into a persistent public health threat. This doesn't appear to be a passing episode. What Tehran is enduring nowadays is a chronic crisis that demands lasting solutions rather than Band-Aid measures. Until then, many here will keep paying the price. Toida Sadi, Al Jazeera, Tehran.
