Following the death of a young cyclist and another serious accident involving a 13-year-old, Cincinnati students Kristen Bassler and Iggy Dwyer are speaking out about the dangers faced by teen cyclists. They describe frequent near-misses with vehicles and the feeling of vulnerability while riding on local roads.

The teens have been actively advocating for safer bike routes at their school and in the community. They suggest measures such as painting clearer crosswalks and installing elevated crossings to protect cyclists, hoping for the creation of more trails separated from traffic.

I just had these scenarios playing out in my head of all these close calls we've had in the past, and it was honestly keeping me up at night. It all felt so real, just of how similar the age was and just like the kid really just seemed kind of like us, you know. Kristen Bassler and Iggy Dwyer are two Summit Country Day students who love to bike, but have encountered many life-threatening incidents on the road. What the? Causing very, very near misses to me and to the other cars. I could also think of cars in general like when they have like when they're able to go in the other lane around us, sometimes they just ride in the same lane next to us as if to push us like kind of push us to the edge of the road. I don't know if it's like a power stitch or what it is, it's just like they have the power and I feel like we feel so little in those moments. Especially knowing that I've had very similar experiences, I mean crossing the aforementioned State Route 28. It's just simple things like that, these systematic flaws. So they showed me firsthand. I rode 16 and a half miles with them from Christian's home all the way through this trail called the Wasson Way and take it all the way down to the bottom at Red Bank. We'd have to cross over Red Bank Road which is I think a four or five-laned road, pretty big, pretty dangerous crosswalk. Once I'm off the trail that's where you get to the dangerous part. It wasn't only bumpy but scary with moments of us having to walk our bikes so we wouldn't get ran off the road. Christian and Iggy has been advocating for safer bike routes at their school and hopes for the creation of more trails without any drivers. Something as simple as painting crosswalks would be great or transforming you know your standard two white lines in the middle of a high-speed road into an elevated crosswalk like I've seen in Oakley.
