A 17-year-old driver was arrested and charged with eight offences following an alleged high-speed police pursuit in Liverpool, New South Wales, which ended in a crash. The incident resulted in several women being hospitalised, with one woman in critical condition. 

The crash has prompted renewed calls for stricter police pursuit policies, with critics arguing that current guidelines are insufficient. Police have stated that their pursuit guidelines were reviewed two years ago, and due to the severity of the injuries, the incident will be subject to an independent review.

Words can't explain it. Police first spotted the Ford Ranger allegedly speeding through a red light on Elizabeth Drive around 11pm last night. When the driver didn't pull over, the pursuit began. Moments later it was called off, but officers kept an eye on the ute. The vehicle then allegedly tried to reverse into a police car and took off. Another pursuit began through Liverpool, travelling west on Moor Street, coming to a crashing end at the Hume Highway intersection. Sign of bang. Pretty horrific. There was glass everywhere on the other side of the street. The court heard the teen was doing up to 140km per hour in a 70 zone. He's been charged with eight offences including two counts of aggravated dangerous driving, driving without ever having a licence and breach of bail. These are innocent members of the community that were caught up in the reckless actions of a 17-year-old individual. It's something that we're trying to prevent in the first instance. This latest crash will likely only add to growing calls for police to tighten their policy on pursuits to stop more people from getting injured or even killed. Kind of bloody minded, got to catch the person here and now is causing so much harm. Opponents say NSW police are ignoring expert advice and recommendations from the coroners about pursuits. We have a safe driving response and operations guidelines. It was fully reviewed just over two years ago.
